Vancouver Aquarium Uncovered Documentary Screenings
Independent filmmaker Gary Charbonneau’s new documentary film Vancouver Aquarium Uncovered will be screened at the London Central Library on Tuesday January 26th
and at the Palmerston Public Library in Toronto on January 28th. The film will be followed by a discussion with Zoocheck’s Rob Laidlaw about Ontario’s new standards for marine mammals in captivity.
Whales and dolphins in captivity have become increasingly controversial in recent years, both in North America and around the world. Fueled by popular films like The Cove and Blackfish, the debate about whether or not these wide-ranging, deep diving, extremely social, exceptionally intelligent animals should be kept in captivity doesn’t seem like it will be going away anytime soon. In fact, public interest and discussion has sent shockwaves through the marine mammal captivity industry and has led to numerous ongoing public relations, political and legal battles.
Vancouver Aquarium Uncovered is the latest film in this category, a “no holds barred” examination of the Vancouver Aquarium and their long-standing use of whales and dolphins for public display. While the film is focused on one institution, many of the issues discussed are relevant to other jurisdictions, including here in Ontario.
Join us for Ontario’s first public screening of Vancouver Aquarium Uncovered.
