Thirty years ago, on April 20th 1985, a monkey named Britches was rescued, along with 1,115 other animals, from an animal experimentation facility at the University of California, Riverside. He was five weeks old. He had been taken from his mother and was completely alone. Britches’ eyes were sewn shut and a device strapped to his head that emitted a high-pitched screech every few minutes.
Every day, billions of other animals suffer to the degree that Britches did. The only unique thing about Britches’ story is that he was rescued. There remain millions of animals in laboratories in the U.S. and billions around the world who experience abuse, cruelty, and are murdered at the hands of humans.
April 20th is the anniversary of Britches’ rescue and it is the beginning of World Week for Laboratory Animal Liberation. To honour Britches, to remember those who were not rescued, and honour those currently trapped in labs, please take time to pause on this anniversary.
Movie Synopsis – “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” – A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.
