Animals and Media by Ryan Phillips

Ryan Phillips is a PhD student in Ryerson’s Communication and Culture program. His research focuses on advertising and consumer culture, especially in relation to economic and environmental concerns regarding alternative foods.

This talk will draw attention to the various ways in which non-human animals are represented in various forms of contemporary media. It will discuss the theoretical and conceptual tools for critically analyzing media, and will apply them to real world representations of animals in contemporary communications. Media topics include representations of animals in film, news media, music, video games, and television.
