Private Member’s Bill Announcement

Liberal M.P. Nathaniel Erskine-Smith will introduce a private member’s bill this week to modernize Canada’s animal protection laws and bring them into the 21st century.

The bill includes three specific and achievable measures to better protect animals, from wild sharks to our companion animals:

– end the practice of shark finning, a measure supported by over 80% of Canadians;

– close loopholes and strengthen the Criminal Code’s provisions against animal abuse (which have not been updated substantively since 1892), and make it easier to secure convictions for animal cruelty; and

– ban the sale of cat and dog fur within Canada and require labeling of source fur, just as the United States and European Union have done.
