Protest Scadding Court’s Fish Massacre

June 13, 2017 @ 10:00 am - June 17, 2017 @ 5:00 pm

Join Toronto activists, in conjunction with PETA for a variety of actions related to Scadding Court’s Gone Fishin’ event taking place all this week. Thanks to all of you for phoning in to the community centre, rating and reviewing it, and commenting on BlogTO, and protesting at the site. Yesterday, the event opened with 25 chalk messages all around the community centre. Executive Director, Kevin Lee, himself was seen scrubbing off the huge message at the entrance.

Pressure has already been applied but our goal is to get some guarantee that this will be the last year for Gone Fishin’. This week’s actions will include protests as hundreds of school children will attend the event with their teachers. Images of Nemo and Dory will appeal to the kids with messages asking them not to kill their fish friends. We also plan a visit to the office of City Councillor Joe Cressy who has so far refused to meet with us.

Here is a schedule for this week:
Tuesday 10:00-1:30 Outreach/protest
Wednesday 9:30-1:30 Outreach/protest
Thursday 9:30-1:30 Outreach/protest
Friday 9:30-1:30 Outreach/protest
Saturday: TBA

I am committed to a ribfest on Saturday so would love someone to offer to be a presence on this day:)
MONDAY JUNE 19!!! TBA This is the day the pool is drained! A big action will be needed!
Please indicate in the comments any task you think you can do and when.
If you haven’t signed the petition, please do so and share!

For the past 14 years, the Scadding Court indoor swimming pool has been turned into a slaughtherhouse for fish. The photo above was taken last year on the day the pool was drained and the fish who had survived the hunt, suffocated and died in a slow, horrific way.

For the past 2 years, with the help of PETA, we have tried to educate the public about the cruelty of fishing and appealed to the community centre to cancel the event. The executive director ‘welcomed’ our information but insisted that the program will never end.

City councillor Joe Cressy, has so far refused to meet with us. We want to let him and the administrators at the community centre know that offering school kids and families the opportunity to participate in a ‘canned hunt’ is not only cruel but not the most effective way to teach ecology.

Please help us shut down this disgusting event and let the world know that fish deserve respect!
