SUMMARY:Roses Law: Global Week of Action
DESCRIPTION:Activists from all over the world will be taking action to demand 5 fundamental rights for animals: Right to Rescue. Right to be Free\, not owned. Right to not be Killed by Humans. Right to Representation. Right to Home or habitat. \nSouth Korea\, Mexico City\, Chicago+Champaign\, Montevideo\, Phoenix\, Toronto\, and The Bay Area will be livestreaming their actions. So please RSVP GOING to this event page then\, share and invite friends. Local actions and other news will be announced on this page so please check back and engage often! \nAbout Roses Law: \nOn September 29th\, 2018 a chicken named Rose was rescued from an Amazon-supplying factory farm in California. Direct Action Everywhere found Rose and nine other chickens who were in need of urgent care as the Sonoma County Police arrived on the farm. The police abducted nine of the birds who were then mercilessly killed by Sonoma County. One officer\, however\, did the right thing and instructed a rescuer to take Rose to get urgent care.\nMeanwhile\, all around the world\, animals are being exploited and killed and are being displaced or eradicated by us humans. Those of us who rescue animals or work to expose these injustices are facing felony charges and decades in prison while clear cases of criminal animal cruelty are ignored. Animals deserve the same basic rights that any of us do and it’s time for an animal bill of rights. In honor of Rose\, the nine birds who were killed by Sonoma County and trillions of other victims around the planet\, people everywhere are building support for Rose’s Law: An Animal Bill of Rights.

SUMMARY:DXE: This is Not a Drill (Cancel Animal AG)
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends\, known and unknown\, the challenge of the coronavirus pandemic has had us scrambling for ways to remain champions for our earthling cousins; the animals. The need to completely reform our food system is clear now more than ever. Yet our governments are failing to acknowledge the connection between pandemics and our relationship with animals. The media has been asleep\, failing to call out our abusive relationship with animals as the root cause of our global health crisis.\n\nFor updates check the event page at https://www.facebook.com/events/1389236287941349\n\nIt is up to us to rattle the cages!\n\nThis is not a drill. Covid-19 is our alarm\, a blaring call for us to make a global about-face. This event and our action will be synchronous with chapters across the country performing the same action. The hope here is that we will get more media attention this way. We will meet at a designated location (TBD) and perform a still protest! There will be a core group of 12 members in ‘attire’ and all other activists will for a blockade at the back. All activists are asked to wear black if possible! We need your support – the more activists present\, the more effective the event will be!\n\nROUTE:\nWe will begin at the Simcoe Wave at 243 Queens Quay W\, and will perform the first demo there at 2p.m. We will then travel as a group to Yonge and Queen and perform Demo #2 outside of the Eaton Centre and finally we will travel as a group to Dundas Square and perform the demo for a 3rd time! Each iteration of the demo is only 15 minutes long which is why we felt it was important to perform 3 times. Traveling through the city will also allow us to be seen by many more people while en route.

SUMMARY:Nuit Blanche: Remembering the Victims of Quality Meat Packers
DESCRIPTION:At this year’s Nuit Blanche (Toronto’s free\, city-wide sunset-to-sunrise celebration of contemporary art)\, artists will transform the abandoned Quality Meat Packers pig slaughterhouse into a “playful artistic hangout.” https://www.blogto.com/arts/2019/08/toronto-slaughterhouse-nuit-blanche/ \nWe believe it’s important that any use of this space acknowledge the millions of victims who had their lives taken there\, and that people who show up that night to “experience” the art\, should also have to consider the victims. \nWe will line the road leading up to the slaughterhouse\, all holding candles and real photos of the faces of the individuals who lost their lives there\, taken at one of the hundreds of vigils held at this slaughterhouse and on “pig island” prior to the slaughterhouse closing. \nWe’re asking everyone to dress in black and show up with the intent of ensuring the horrors of this place are not washed over and that the suffering of the millions of individuals who lost their lives here not be ignored. \nPhotos and candles will be provided. We may show some imagery and/or play some sounds of pigs during the evening\, but we’re asking everyone to be solemn\, respectful and quiet during this vigil. \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

Meeting spot is the big Toronto Sign. \nJoin us as we take bold action as part of an exciting global campaign – to establish an Animal Bill of Rights in Canada and around the world. \nLet’s elevate the urgency for – and drive a positive conversation in support of – an animal bill of rights. Let’s achieve animal liberation in one generation! \nThis event marks the one year anniversary of Rose’s rescue. Rose is a sweet-natured chicken saved from an Amazon-supplying factory farm in California. She was one of 10 chickens the activists had identified as needing urgent medical care. Instead of letting them go\, nine were sent to be killed. Just Rose was spared. \nThis will be a non-violent event – all are welcome. Stay tuned for details. \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Grassroots ARAs March in Toronto Pride Parade
DESCRIPTION:SAVE THE DATE for LGBTQ+ Grassroots ARAs and their allies marching in Toronto’s 39th Annual Pride Parade! \nJoin us as we march behind an Animal Rights Toronto banner promoting our grassroots community including: \nDirect Action Everywhere Toronto\nAV: Toronto\, Canada (Anonymous for the Voiceless)\nThe Save Movement (Toronto Pig Save\, Toronto Chicken Save\, Toronto Cow Save\, Toronto Fish Save\, Toronto Fur Animal Save\, Save Outreach Squad)\nClimate Vegan \nExpect chanting\, leafleting and fun! \n—————————————————\nINFORMATION BELOW IS FROM 2018 AND WILL BE UPDATED FOR 2019 \nMEET-UP LOCATION: We’ll be gathering in the staging area on Bloor St. E. between Church St. and Ted Rogers Way. (see map) If you’re taking the subway\, it’s recommended that you exit at Sherbourne Station and walk west on Bloor. \nWHAT TO LOOK FOR: If you don’t run into us wearing our fabulous AR shirts\, look for Marshals holding signs with letters. We’ll be in the “J” section. Our group is “J46”. We’re marching right behind “Aviva Canada” and in front of “Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary”. \nMEET-UP TIME: We’ve been assigned an “arrival time” of 3:30pm sharp. We’ve been asked NOT to arrive early or late. There is limited space in the staging area\, so all groups have been assigned staggered arrival times. Don’t be concerned that our arrival time is after the Parade start time of 2pm. That is true for most of the approximately 200 groups marching in the Parade. The Parade starts at 2pm\, but the last groups are not expected to finish till around 6pm. \nDEPARTURE TIME: It’s hard to say\, but we shouldn’t expect to wait too long in the staging area before we’re on our way. We’re guessing we’ll start moving by 4pm\, though it could be sooner or later. It will depend on the logistics of the day. The organizers are merging marchers and floats (coming from their own staging area)\, so we need to be ready to go at any time. \nPARADE ROUTE: We will march west on Bloor to Yonge\, south on Yonge to Dundas\, then east on Dundas. The Parade ends at Dundas and Victoria. \nMARCHING TIME: The Parade route itself should take 1-1.5 hours to march\, barring unexpected delays or interruptions. The Parade committee’s goal is to finish the Parade by 6pm. \nEARLY EXIT: Most of the route is fenced-off from the sidewalks\, making it difficult to exit the Parade early. However\, if needed\, there should be an opportunity to exit at College St. \nWHAT TO WEAR: Please wear a t-shirt representing one of the four main local grassroots groups represented in the Parade… Anonymous for the Voiceless (AV)\, Climate Vegan (CV)\, Direct Action Everywhere – DxE\, and The Save Movement. If you don’t have a t-shirt from one of the groups\, see if you can make arrangements to get one before or on the day of the Parade. If that’s not possible\, please try to wear a generic\, love-based\, AR t-shirt. \nWHAT TO BRING/ NOT TO BRING: The Parade will go ahead rain or shine. Please dress appropriately. Even if the temps are cooler\, don’t underestimate the UV. Consider sunscreen\, and bring enough water to stay hydrated. Non-human animals are not permitted in the Parade (other than service animals for which advanced notice has been provided). Strollers and wagons (or\, as Tina RV\, calls them\, small floats!) for the kids are welcomed. Other than AV (who may be bringing some Truth signs for their contingent)\, please do not bring your own signs. We will provide a limited number of Pride-themed signs. Feel free to bring Pride flags\, though. Small flags are usually available for purchase at the StreetFair. \nCODE OF CONDUCT: Participants are expected to to adhere to the following https://www.facebook.com/notes/direct-action-everywhere-toronto/code-of-conduct/1911905259052836/ \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:How to Give a Speakout - Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Find your voice\, and learn how to use it for animals! \nWe’re excited to be hosting this workshop on how to write & give a speak out! Giving a speakout is an amazing way to put your passion and creativity into action. This workshop will give you the tools you need to write an amazing speak out. We’ll also practice our speak outs and give each other feedback so we can hone our skills\, and gain the confidence to speak publicly. Even if you don’t think you’re ready to give a speakout\, or have no interest in ever doing one\, this workshop will teach you skills that will help you in your activism so we recommend all activists to come out. \nThis workshop will be followed by an action where we will be giving many of you the opportunity to give speakouts publicly! You will have the choice whether you’d like to speak or not\, so even if you don’t feel ready to give a speakout after the workshop\, we encourage everyone to join us! The action is entirely optional\, so if you’d like to come to the workshop but aren’t able to join us afterwards\, we’d still love to see you. \nWe will provide some light refreshments\, and welcome vegan food donations for the group to share. \nIf you have any accessibility needs\, please let us know and we will do our best to meet them. \nIf you have any questions – message us! \nDxE cultivates a welcoming and supportive community. SUMMARY:TDSB Protest
DESCRIPTION:Join Nation Rising supported by Direct Action Everywhere – DxE in demanding the Toronto District School Board stop serving carcinogenic food to children. \nWe will assemble outside the TDSB office at 9am. A lineup of children will be smoking fake cigarettes\, and a lunch lady will be serving a heaping tray of smokes. Signs will read: \n“Processed meat is a group one carcinogen is in the same category at plutonium\, asbestos\, and tobacco smoke – The WHO” \n“Stop Serving Carcinogens to Children!” \n———————- \nBackground \nA report from the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer released in 2015 categorized processed meat (including hotdogs\, hamburgers\, pepperoni\, and ham) as a group one carcinogen in the same category as plutonium\, asbestos\, and tobacco smoke: \nhttp://www.iarc.fr/en/media-centre/pr/2015/pdfs/pr240_E.pdf \nA petition was created asking the Toronto District School Board to act on this knowledge responsibly\, and in the best interest of the children by not allowing processed meat to be served at school\, but it was ignored: \nhttps://www.change.org/p/toronto-school-board-stop-serving-known-carcinogenic-food-to-children \nEmail correspondence with the TDSB confirms that they are aware of the research\, but have no plans to eliminate processed meat from the menu. \n50toro05005 Participants are expected to to adhere to the following https://www.facebook.com/notes/direct-action-everywhere-toronto/code-of-conduct/1911905259052836/ \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:CNE Farm Building Challenge
DESCRIPTION:From August 17th – September 3rd\, the CNE’s farm building will be showcasing animal exploitation and we are challenging you to do something about it! \nProbably the worst case example is a mother pig in a gestation crate on display\, as if confining an animal in a crate so small she cannot even turn around is normal and something to be shown off. \nTHE CHALLENGE \n1. Choose a day to go with at least one other person (so one person can film) \n2. Go into the farm building and use your voice to speak up against the exploitation of animals on display and have someone film it. Tell the truth that is hidden behind the narrative of those that normalize violence against others. \nIt can be a simple as saying: “This is wrong!!” loud enough for others around you to hear it\, or maybe you want to say more\, like: “Look at this mother pig! This is wrong!! If it were a dog in the crate\, how many of you would think this is ok? She cannot even turn around. Why do you think it’s ok to treat animals this way?”; or attend a demo (milking) and ask a disruptive question “Is it true she had to be made pregnant to cause her to lactate like human moms? What happens to her baby?”; or stage a loud conversation between you and a friend in front of a baby cow “This baby cow wants his mom!” \n3. Post your video with the hashtags #CNELies #RightToKnow; share your post to this page; and\, tag friends to take up this challenge. \n4. Upload your video to this shared drive https://goo.gl/3X9Mym where we will compile all the footage into one video that shows an animal rights movement coming together to speak up against injustice. \nIt’s so important to use our voices to speak up against injustice whenever we see it and we want to use this video to inspire everyone to do it. If this is your first time speaking out\, and need some coaching or assistance\, you can feel free to reach out to AR Singer for coaching. \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Kingian Nonviolence 2-Day Workshop - Toronto
DESCRIPTION:WHAT: Come join us for this transformational two-day workshop exploring Dr. King’s philosophy of nonviolent conflict reconciliation and the strategies of the Civil Rights Movement. See how the lessons of the past can be applied in the present. \nThis workshop has helped thousands of people in various social justice movements as well as in prisons\, law enforcement\, schools and other communities understand the depth of the philosophy of nonviolence and conflict reconciliation. \nIf you are an organizer working for social change\, an activist working to reduce violence in your community\, a youth worker/organizer\, or just someone who wants to learn how to resolve their personal conflicts better\, this workshop is for you! \nWHEN: August 11th & 12th\, 9-5 on each day. Please note\, in order to receive a certificate of completion for the workshop you must attend both days. \nFOOD: TBD – We may make arrangements for group meals\, or may ask you to pack a lunch – stay tuned!! \nCOST: Participants will be asked at the end of the two day training to consider giving a cash gift proportionate to their ability to pay and the value they feel they received. This is based on the principle of Gift Economics. See the training organizations explanation on Gift Economics – http://eastpointpeace.org/gifteconomics/ \nWHO: Chris Van Breen is a co-founder of the international grassroots animal activist network Direct Action Everywhere. He started organizing in 1995\, when he became a leader with a Latinx-focused youth mentoring program. He still works for human rights causes\, but after a touching moment with a cow named Bernie\, he spends much of his free time fighting for animals. Taking nonviolent direct action has always been important to Chris\, whether it is protesting\, teaching\, cooking for other activists\, or doing Open Rescue. Chris leads nonviolence workshops around the country. He works with the East Point Peace Academy and the Kingian Nonviolence Coordinating Committee to further the dream of institutionalizing and internationalizing nonviolence\, including offering trainings to all with a focus on the animal rights movement. He is inspired by his family\, who fought for farm workers with Cesar Chavez\, and by every activist who confronts injustice. \nMore info on Kingian Non-violence – http://eastpointpeace.org/kingian/ \nHOW: Register here – https://goo.gl/forms/cjybcfNTs7LCIjRJ3\nYou must register to receive required prep materials and the location of the training\, \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:World Day for Animals in Labs - DxE Toronto
DESCRIPTION:Join us to let the public know that cosmetic and other tests on animals is a horror show that needs to stop. Since 1979\, animal rights activists have been observed World Day for Animals in Labs on April 24th. Direct Action Everywhere is proud to be joining this campaign. \nMillions of animals are subjected to confinement\, mutilation\, stress\, pain and death in the name of science and beauty every year. Just like us\, these animals feel fear and pain and desire love and joy. They do not consent to this research. \n—\nThis is a peaceful demonstration. We will be meeting at south-east corner of Bay & College street. Dress code – feel free to wear your DxE shirt! We may also be wearing medical gowns\, and have an installation where one activist portrays an animal testing scene. \nA bill to end costmetic testing had its 3rd reading at the Canadian Sentate\, sponsored by Hon. Carolyn Stewart Olsen. The debate was adjourned. Bill (S-214) is an Act to amend the Food and Drugs Act (cruelty-free cosmetics). Let’s remind the politicians that this has to be given their full attention. Search for “214” at the following link: https://sencanada.ca/en/content/sen/chamber/421/debates/186db_2018-03-01-e?language=e to see useful background information. \nFurther resources:\nhttps://www.animalalliance.ca/campaigns/be-cruelty-free/cosmetic-testing-canada/ http://www.hsi.org/world/canada/work/endanimaltesting/be_cruelty_free/be_cruelty_free.html\nhttp://www.pcrm.org/factsheets/resources/ethical-research-and-education-fact-sheets \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:DxE Toronto Sanctuary Volunteer Day - November
DESCRIPTION:Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary (HEEFS) has many volunteer days per month. Each month\, DxE Toronto will select one of those days and promote it by creating an event page for our members. Use this event page to see who may be going and to offer / ask for rides. \nYou must register on the HEEFS site using this link specifically for Nov. 12 – There is a max number of people per volunteer day. The link will stop working once the max has been hit. https://happilyeveresther.wufoo.com/forms/zxsr75g0ni94xp/ \nFull volunteer schedule – https://www.happilyeveresther.ca/events-calendar?view=calendar&month=November-2017 \nWHAT TO BRING– Bring a lunch\, a reusable water bottle and clothes & shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty–HEEFS supplies the pitch forks\, gloves and tools. The work is mainly outdoors\, so check the weather forecast for Campbellville Ontario\, and wear rugged shoes. This work date is rain or shine although we do not work in thunder. If thunder starts\, unfortunately we will be forced to cancel the work day. Dress for the weather and consider including rubber boots\, a hat\, gloves\, sunglasses (eye protection)\, sunscreen\, and insect repellant to your “work day kit” —you may want a bug net for your head. \nNo open toed shoes please! \nNo pets please! We’re all animal lovers here\, but this is for the safety of everyone involved. \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.
