SUMMARY:DxE Toronto - Wishing Well Sanctuary - Volunteer afternoon
DESCRIPTION:DxE Toronto is delighted to introduce an additional farm animal sanctuary as a volunteer opportunity. Wishing Well Sanctuary is just north of Holland Marsh near Bradford\, Ontario\, only 45 minutes from central Toronto. \nWe’ll be helping winterize the sanctuary\, do general clean up and of course we’ll be meeting the animals. There’ll be something for everyone – including simply visiting with those animals that appreciate extra cuddles 🙂 http://www.wishingwellsanctuary.org/meet-the-animals.php \nWHAT TO BRING – A snack and something to drink. Warm / layered clothing & sturdy shoes/boots that just may get a little dirty! Wishing Well supplies all the tools and a comfortable seating area. No pets please! \nIf anyone is able to offer rides\, please use the event page to give details of pickup spot. \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Free Range Truth - DxE September Day of Action
DESCRIPTION:DxE investigated Pitman Family Farms\, the most prominent supplier of free-range\, slow-growth chickens to retailed like Whole Foods under then name “Mary’s Chicken”. On-site 24 hour surveillance uncovered that no birds were being allowed outside. Instead\, chickens were kept indoors in crowded\, filthy sheds where they had to fight for food and water. The activists came across one bird who had gone blind from pecking and was 1/2 the size of the other birds. They rescued her\, named her Sophie and brought her to sanctuary where she now lives happy\, safe and free. \n“Slow growth” farms are a new trend in animal welfare. In these farms\, chickens bred for their flesh grow at a slower rate in an attempt to eliminate some of the suffering that accompanies the fast growth rate these birds endure due to genetic manipulation. However\, on slow growth farms\, chickens continue to be confined and now spend twice as long in miserable conditions. One study found that birds in free-range\, slow-growth farms have nine times as many broken breastbones. Ultimately\, all chickens end up in terrifying and violent slaughterhouses. In fact\, some of the birds from this farm ended up at Ming’s Poultry in San Francisco – the site of the first daylight open rescue conducted in US history (during the DxE Forum 2017) – where birds were languishing in cages without water\, full of infection\, waiting to be killed. \nIt’s time that the public is told the truth about the violence behind animal agriculture\, including so-called “humane” meat\, eggs and milk. \nMODEL ACTION PLAN:  \nSolo/”Challenge” Action:\nAn activist walks into Whole Foods or a place of violence\, e.g. slaughterhouse\, grocery store\, fur store and tapes up the Warning Sign. The activist can then either give a speakout about the sign or ask an employee (nicely) if they would keep the sign up so the public can learn the truth. If the employee refuses and takes down the sign\, the activist can give a speakout about the importance of telling the truth about animal exploitation and bearing witness to animals’ suffering. \nHave someone film you doing the above action\, post it online and tag three people to challenge them to do the action. \nVariations\n– hold the sign while giving a speakout\n– hold the sign outside while speaking\n– post the sign on the outside of the building\n– chalk the message on the sidewalk outside the building\n– project the image onto a building\n– do a banner drop with a large version of the image \nGroup/”Day of Action” Plan\nCreate a variation of the solo challenge for your chapter to do as a whole at Whole Foods or another place of violence\, e.g.\n– disruption inside a store holding warning signs\n– disruption inside a store after one person posts the sign\n– large banner drop with the sign\n– bearing witness at a slaughterhouse\n– projecting the image onto a store\, slaughterhouse or government building \nIf doing an action at Whole Foods or another similar grocery store/restaurant (i.e. “humane washer”)\, talk about the fraud and myth of “humane”\, “free range” and “slow growth” chicken and tell Sophie’s story. \nPARTICIPATING CITIES: \n–BRAZIL– \nRio: https://www.facebook.com/events/1421123101304715/ \nSao Paulo: https://www.facebook.com/events/1557436200943099/ \n–CANADA– \nEdmonton: https://www.facebook.com/events/1758791294420073/ \nHalifax: https://www.facebook.com/events/2032362146997108/ \nLondon: https://www.facebook.com/events/148523799076794/ \nOttawa: https://www.facebook.com/events/124312931553305/ \nToronto: https://www.facebook.com/events/237961786731079/ \nVancouver: https://www.facebook.com/events/116645565664938/ \nWinnipeg: https://www.facebook.com/events/1545455438882092/ \n–DENMARK– \nCopenhagen: https://www.facebook.com/events/920929058061043/ \n–FRANCE– \nParis: https://www.facebook.com/events/105336486875896/ \n–GERMANY– \nBerlin: https://www.facebook.com/events/134170720535848/ \n–NETHERLANDS– \nAmsterdam: https://www.facebook.com/events/278843409251980/ \n–PORTUGAL– \nLisbon: https://www.facebook.com/events/354057381702234/ \n–UK– \nBelfast: https://www.facebook.com/events/359833211096357/ \nLondon: https://www.facebook.com/events/114408432575602/ \n–UKRAINE– \nKyiv: https://www.facebook.com/events/630029140537446/ \n–USA– \nBoston: https://www.facebook.com/events/1410989619018833/ \nCharleston: https://www.facebook.com/events/353321425088547/ \nCharlotte: https://www.facebook.com/events/1571758649513419/ \nChicago: https://www.facebook.com/events/151656212053638/ \nColorado: https://www.facebook.com/events/119662205324922/ \nDallas: https://www.facebook.com/events/109702013060322/ \nFresno: https://www.facebook.com/events/1903322726587419/ \nInland Empire: https://www.facebook.com/events/117885428877536 \nLos Angeles: https://www.facebook.com/events/1476064562692085/ \nMadison: https://www.facebook.com/events/426826961045684/ \nMilwaukee: https://www.facebook.com/events/1935688810022627/ \nNYC: https://www.facebook.com/events/113434509332627/ \nPhoenix: https://www.facebook.com/events/1318904614885605/ \nPittsburgh: https://www.facebook.com/events/1573240426059436/ \nPortland: https://www.facebook.com/events/269278816809489/ \nRaleigh: https://www.facebook.com/events/122587598470517/ \nSan Jose: https://www.facebook.com/events/743331802517249/ \nSan Luis Obispo: https://www.facebook.com/events/262277970935038/ \nSF Bay Area: https://www.facebook.com/events/114865772556642/ \nSt. Louis: https://www.facebook.com/events/1954041928201852/ \nTwin Cities: https://www.facebook.com/events/1462542043853443/ \nDirect Action Everywhere (DxE) is a grassroots network of animal rights activists working to create a world where every animal is safe\, happy and free. SUMMARY:Roaring Silence Toronto - Let's support our friends in Vancouver
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, July 8th\, Roaring Silence Vancouver will stand in silence to cry out the unspoken cry of exploited animals. Roaring Silence demonstrations take place in cities around the world\, and Vancouver will be kicking off the first ever Canadian roar! Let’s show them our support\, and stand in silence and solidarity with our fellow activists to help end animal cruelty. \nVancouver event (July 8th):\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1246635142088517/ \nThe Kickstarter ends July 4th:\nhttps://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1186602416/roaring-silence-t-shirts-for-compassion \nThis event is in solidarity with Vancouver activists supported by Direct Action Everywhere Toronto\, The Save Movement and AV: Toronto\, Canada\n\nMore details to follow as the event gets fully planned out. In the meantime\, be sure to like their page: Roaring Silence Vancouver and please invite your friends. \n“Roaring Silence is a silent demonstration for the animals who are killed\, exploited\, confined and tortured in the food industry\, in the fur industry\, for research\, for entertainment\, and as decoration.\nIn Canada alone\, in just one year the industries kill 34 million cows\, 21.4 million pigs\, 708 million chickens\, turkeys and ducks\, 4 million animals for fur and over 90 million tons of fish.”\n– (http://www.roaringsilence.ca/) \n“Every day\, billions of animals are kept in conditions of slavery and are humiliated\, exploited\, and ultimately murdered for no excusable reason. The great majority of the Canadian public is blind to the suffering of the animals and does not know the horrific practices endured by animals used for milk\, eggs\, and meat.  \nWe will stand in silent lines holding signs demonstrating a clear message of liberation for animals. We will expose the lies and concealment of the animal food\, entertainment\, research\, and textiles industries. Our somber silence will draw attention to the seriousness of these crimes against animals. \nWe will not be ignored.” \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Action for Chickens
DESCRIPTION:Join Direct Action Everywhere and Toronto Chicken Save as we demand at City Hall that the City of Toronto recognize the consciousness of chickens and acknowledge that there is no humane way to exploit them. This will be followed by a historic march (2+ hours) from City Hall to the Maple Leaf Poultry slaughterhouse demonstrating our willingness for self-sacrifice towards the liberation of animals. The march will include a disruption of a Canada Post postal station where we will demand an end to the shipping of live baby chicks through the mail\, part of the invisible #TRUTH behind backyard chickens. \nBACKGROUND \nThis action kicks off our joint campaign to stop the City’s plan to introduce backyard chickens. The issue is going to be voted by City Council on October 2\, 3 and 4. Our campaign includes a petition; targeted meetings with animal-friendly councillors; partnerships and coalition development (e.g.Animal Alliance of Canada\, Microsanctuary Movement); and escalated future direct actions. \nRead more about the issues around backyard chickens and actions you can take now to help in the discussion posts of this event and watch for the petition link in the PINNED post (coming shortly) \nSCHEDULE\n3:00 – Meet up and briefing\n3:30 – Action at City Hall\n4:30 – March including Disruption\n7:30 – Rara‘s amazing food followed by Chicken Vigil \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

Taking nonviolent direct action has always been important to Chris\, whether it is protesting\, teaching\, cooking for other activists\, or doing Open Rescue. Chris leads nonviolence workshops around the country. He works with the East Point Peace Academy and the Kingian Nonviolence Coordinating Committee to further the dream of institutionalizing and internationalizing nonviolence\, including offering trainings to all with a focus on the animal rights movement. Housing is also closed\, which means you will be responsible for finding your own housing. \nREGISTRATION: http://bit.ly/2efbeM7 \nSCHEDULE (subject to change): http://bit.ly/2oSviO2 \nFollow this page for more information\, including information on housing\, transportation/travel\, food\, the schedule\, registration\, and more! Questions? E-mail forum@directactioneverywhere.com. \n— \nPLANT YOUR FLAG\nWe must have a bold vision of the world we want and a clear path to get there. \nWe are at the beginning of a long\, uncertain\, and bumpy road towards animal liberation. It took over 30 years of attempts before the first successful ascent of Mt. Everest. The only reason climbing the infamous mountain is much more approachable today is because of the flags (knowledge\, resources\, and yes\, literal flags) laid down by preceding climbers. While none of us can singlehandedly mark the entire path to our summit\, every one of us can plant flags along the way. \nWhat flag will you plant?

SUMMARY:In Silence They Suffer - DxE April Day of Action
DESCRIPTION:Activists\, with a piece of black tape over their mouths\, will enter a place that sells animal products. Once inside\, one activist will step forward and speak to shoppers about how animals are hidden and abused\, and they have no voice to stand up for themselves (using Annie as an example – a Hen on a “cage-free” “humane” farm who was found covered in feces and starving). \nWe will repeat this action at several locations. If you’re interested in doing this speakout\, please let us know!! \nThe meetup location (downtown central) will be announced to everyone in a message group the day before the action. \nNOTE: Please check the Facebook event for updates.

SUMMARY:DxE Toronto-Feb Day of Action and Social
DESCRIPTION:DxE Toronto’s monthly Day of Action followed by pizza social ($10 suggested donation to cover cost of social). \nThe action will immediatly follow Wayne Hsiung‘s talk ‘Rescue or Terrorism? How Big Ag is Criminalizing Animal Care’ (see event page –https://www.facebook.com/events/1318301648191579/). \nDxE activists investigated Rainbow Farms\, a Certified Humane cage-free egg farm supplying eggs to Safeway. Barns on the farm contained over 30\,000 birds in intense confinement\, which led to cannibalism\, disease\, and piling – a phenomenon where birds are literally crushed to death. Scarlett was close to becoming one of those birds – she was pecked at and trampled on by the other hens and was going blind. DxE activists rescued her\, took her to the vet\, and provided her with a forever home at a sanctuary. Now\, Scarlett has friends and freedom. \nNow\, we need to share Scarlett’s story and let the world know that eggs are never humane and we demand animal liberation now! \nMODEL ACTION PLAN: \nOur action plan will focus on the thousands of hens who die horrific deaths due to “piling” every day in cage free egg farms\, where birds are crushed to death by other birds due to confinement. Activists will enter a place of violence and do a die-in as a “dog pile” – activists laying on top of one another. \nOther activists who are not in the “dog pile” hold signs and give a speakout about the violence of cage free egg farms followed by singing I’m In Here – by Sia. \nABOUT DxE EVENTS \nDxE’s organizers around the world build empowered networks for animal liberation. Based on the most innovative scholarship on social change and the recent successes of the animal rights movement in countries around the world\, DxE’s model focuses on building the kindling for a true social movement to be set ablaze. We do this by: (1) supporting activists locally in speaking strongly for animals under our organizing principles – http://directactioneverywhere.com/organizing-principles/; and (2) connecting those activists with others worldwide to create empowered networks for change. \nAnimal rights activists in over 150 cities and 30 countries have united under the banner “It’s not Food. It’s Violence” since our campaign started in October 2013. \nBut we need your help to keep up the momentum. Join us at this event as we demand an end to atrocities against innocent animals. \nSAFER SPACE POLICY – Full details here https://www.facebook.com/DXEToronto/notes \nDxE has a Safer Space Policy to facilitate an immediate response to any oppressive actions by attendees of our official events. Oppressive actions include: Discrimination on the basis of race\, sex\, age\, size\, class\, ability\, reproductive choice\, sexuality\, and gender identity; and\, promoting disrespect or violence towards nonhuman animals. We strive to create a community that is safe and welcoming\, and which prioritizes the needs of people who are typically marginalized by society. \nAll DxE Toronto events will be drug-and-alcohol-free due to safety concerns. \nCONSENT FOR SOCIAL MEDIA: \nDxE events are social media intensive. Photos and videos are regularly taken at actions\, open meetings\, and other activities. If you do not consent to appear in photos and videos\, please let our media personnel know at the beginning of events. We will also remind attendants of this policy at each event. \nLAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: \nAs settler animal rights/liberation activists uninvited to the traditional\, ancestral\, unceded and occupied territories of the First Nations and peoples\, we acknowledge that we are unable to do animal advocacy work without using the resources from this land\, and are often complicit in colonial systems that perpetuate violence against Indigenous Peoples. We must continue to learn and take responsibilities to help decolonize.

Something for all comfort levels. Separate event page here –https://www.facebook.com/events/1904661296471803/ \nCould you soon be charged as a “terrorist” for taking a sick animal to the vet? \nFrom the dog meat slaughterhouses of Yulin to the White House’s turkey farm\, the grassroots animal rights network Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) executed 6 “open rescues” in 2016\, and reached millions in media outlets such as Nightline (http://bit.ly/2b75oi0) and The New York Times (http://nyti.ms/2ek9d5m). But could forces in Big Ag\, and their allies in the government\, stamp out open rescue by claiming these nonviolent rescues are acts of “terrorism”? \nIn this talk\, DxE lead investigator and former law professor Wayne Hsiung will: \n– explain the strategy and law behind creating a mass movement for open rescue;\n– detail the efforts made by Big Ag\, from China to Whole Foods\, to suppress transparency in the food system;\n– discuss recent allegations of “ecoterrorism\,” and how activists can effectively respond to attempts to chill our movement from powerful action. \nWhether you’re a veteran animal rights activists interested in how to get involved in open rescue\, or an animal lover who’s worried that taking care of a sick bird may someday lead you to being charged with “terrorism\,” this talk will have something for you. \nSPEAKER BIO \nWayne Hsiung is co-founder of the global animal rights network Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) and lead investigator in the DxE Open Rescue Network. His work as an investigator has been reported on in The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. Prior to co-founding DxE\, Wayne studied behavioral economics as a NSF Graduate Fellow at MIT\, taught at Northwestern School of Law (where he co-authored research with Harvard’s Cass Sunstein on the impact of climate change on animals)\, and practiced securities law at two national law firms while maintaining a pro bono practice representing victims of domestic violence. Wayne has organized for social justice campaigns since 1999\, including campaigns against capital punishment and for housing justice. \n

SUMMARY:The Violence Behind Every Egg - DxE January Day of Action
DESCRIPTION:DxE monthly day of action followed by social and vegan feast provided by Rara‘s (suggested $10 donation for the feast but come even if you’re broke!) \nDAY OF ACTION \nWhether eggs come from a cage-free farm or from battery cages\, the violence is the same. Behind every egg is misery\, disease\, suffering\, and death.  \nJoin activists as we share with the world the reality behind the egg industry.  \nWatch our most recent investigation and #OpenRescue at a “Certified Humane” Egg Farm – https://www.facebook.com/theirturn/videos/1839469329636789/ \nGreat read on a DxE Chicago action for eggs – http://www.counterpunch.org/2017/01/12/why-i-got-kicked-out-of-whole-foods-again/\n\nACTION PLAN:  \nActivists will enter a place of violence where eggs are being sold and setup two formations of activists representing a caged-farm and a cage-free farm. In front of both the caged and cage-free formation will be egg cartons with (fake) bloody eggs inside of them. The rest of the participants will pick up the bloody eggs and line up behind the formations\, holding the bloody eggs with both hands.  \nActivists inside both the cage-free formation and the caged formation will do an alternating speakout with the following lines:  \nBC = Battery Cage\nCF = Cage Free \nBC: I live in a battery cage\nCF: I live in a cage free farm\nBC: All of my brothers were killed on the day they were born\nCF: All of my brothers were killed on the day they were born\nBC: My beak was burned off when I was only a baby\nCF: My beak was burned off when I was only a baby\nBC: I was separated from my family and thrown into a barn\nCF: I was separated from my family and thrown into a barn\nBC: I lay so many eggs\, my body can’t keep up\nCF: I lay so many eggs\, my body can’t keep up\nBC: My cage is so small\, I cannot flap my wings\nCF: There are so many birds here\, I’m scared to move around\nBC: I am going insane from the boredom\nCF: I cannot breathe from the ammonia\nBC: My feet get stuck inside the wire floor\nCF: I get pecked at and literally cannibalized by other birds \nBC: I live in a cage of wire\nCF: I live in a cage of flesh\nBC: I’m scared and I’m going to die\nCF: I’m scared and I’m going to die  \n—- \nABOUT DxE EVENTS\nDxE’s organizers around the world build empowered networks for animal liberation.
