SUMMARY:Stop Yulin Forever - Help STOP the dog and cat meat trade!
DESCRIPTION:YULIN DOG MEAT FESTIVAL BEGINS JUNE 21ST… \nOver 10\,000 dogs — many just puppies — are killed at dog festivals in Yulin\, China and it’s going to happen all over again. \nOne of the most terrifying things about the annual Yulin Festival is that it leads to many abductions of household dogs\, cats and other pets by kidnappers looking to make a quick buck as the dog festival begins. CNN reports that local animal lovers often try to buy the dogs before the butchers can\, but the dog sellers often refuse to sell to the activists. \nThe good news is that the Chinese government is feeling the pressure to stop the Yulin Festival. According to the Guardian newspaper\, the country has started regulating the dog meat trade\, and sales dropped by a third from 2013 to 2014. Now that we have their attention on the issue\, another outcry could save these animals and hopefully shut down the festivals and dog & cat farms forever. \nLet’s stand together to STOP the dog and cat meat trade! \nOur greatest power is our compassion;\nOur strongest resource is our voice; don’t let them fade into silence.\nStand United… Stop Yulin Forever! \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Justice For Avni: Toronto Protest
DESCRIPTION:*CALL FOR ACTION: PROTEST AND CANDLELIGHT VIGIL*\n*CO-HOSTS: Let Avni Live Nicole Ada\n*Signs will be provided as well as leaflets for activists to hand out\, however please feel free to create your own!*\n———————————————————\nIndia is home to 57% of the World’s 3\,890 tigers. \nLet that number sink in. LESS than 4\,000 wild tigers are left on this planet. \nThese captivating wild cats are not only an endangered species\, but they play a crucial role in the health and diversity of the ecosystems they reside in. \nAvni\, is a young tigress\, mother to two beautiful 9-month-old cubs. They reside in the forest of Pandharkawda\, in the State of Maharashtra\, India. \nDID YOU KNOW India’s NATIONAL ANIMAL is a TIGER? \nAvni and her children are in CRITICAL DANGER because they are being hunted down! \nThis tigress has been deemed a “man eater” by the state government of Maharashtra who has allegedly killed “13 human beings.” \nNot only has the government assigned notorious private hunters\, armed with tranquilizers and guns to find Avni – but they are also exploiting and using animals like elephants\, horses\, and dogs to assist them in invading HER territory to KILL her on sight. \nThe plight of Avni is not just about her; it’s about the blatant disregard toward ALL WILDLIFE. ALL life forms including tigers are interlinked with each other within an ecosystem\, and their survival is completely dependent on how intact the ecosystem is. \nHuman beings and wild animals CAN co-exist peacefully\, however when human beings kill them\, destroy their natural habitats\, or wandering into THEIR territories\, the survival of those wild animals is threatened greatly. \nKilling Avni would be an absolutely unnecessary and DISGRACEFUL act of murder and cruelty committed by the Government who is supposed to PROTECT ALL WILDLIFE in its country. The Maharashtra Forest Department is sacrificing SO many lives JUST to prioritize human lives. This CAN be changed. \nThe impact of killing Avni could also possibly affect the future generations to come\, AND it could impact the population of tigers on a global scale. This could also damage the economy. \nDID YOU KNOW: “In India\, more than 350 rivers originate from tiger reserves. These reserves also segregate carbon\, provide oxygen and slowly release ground water to regulate floods. Protecting the tiger will in turn protect these vital habitats.” (David Shepherd\, Tiger Time) \nTigers are meant to be revered and revered as they are a sacred symbol in Hindu religion and culture. They symbolize fierceness\, power and elegance. We MUST use our voices to FIGHT for them. \nWe are asking you to PLEASE support this campaign to PUSH for JUSTICE FOR AVNI\, and ALL wildlife we share this Planet with. \nIf we don’t act now\, then these magnificent beings will merely remain as a memory for future generations to come. \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.\n——————————————————\n*IMPORTANT LINKS* \nOFFICIAL PETITION:\nhttps://www.change.org/p/president-of-india-save-avni-the-tigress-and-her-two-cubs-from-death?recruiter=21411309&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=share_petition \nLET AVNI LIVE FB PAGE:\nhttps://www.facebook.com/LetAvniLive/ \nWEBSITES:\nhttps://helpanimalsindia.org\nhttps://bigcatrescue.org/avni/?amp

SUMMARY:Protest Fur Farm Criminals at Guelph Courthouse
DESCRIPTION:A recent undercover investigation at this Guelph area fur farm by Last Chance for Animals has lead to 14 charges of animal cruelty against the owners. Mink were recorded with their heads rotting off\, unsanitary living conditions\, and other atrocities. \nJoin the End Fur Farming movement as we protest outside the Guelph Provincial Offenses Court at the fur farm owners first appearance. People are also welcome to attend the hearing inside if possible. Many folks are not aware that one of Ontario’s largest fur farms is so close to them. We intend to put a big spotlight these people who are breaking the law and torturing animals just a short distance away. \nSigns will be provided but feel free to bring your own. Bring some noise makers too! \nNote: The time of the event may change slightly as more information about the court hearing becomes available. \nView video of animal cruelty inside the farm here:\nhttp://lcanimal.org/index.php/investigations/investigations-in-the-field/millbank-fur-farm \nMore info about the campaign to ban fur farming here:\nwww.endfurfarming.com \nNews report of the criminal charges.\nhttps://www.guelphmercury.com/news-story/8604220-millbank-mink-farm-north-of-guelph-faces-14-charges-of-animal-cruelty \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Nation Rising - Uniting For Change!
DESCRIPTION:Nation Rising is a political advocacy group that is bringing together individuals and organizations across Canada who are concerned about the environment\, health\, and animal rights to rally on Parliament Hill to demand the government stop it’s multi-billion dollar subsidizing of animal agriculture for the good of the people\, the planet\, and the animals. \nTHE PROBLEM\nToday\, the Canadian government spends billions of taxpayer dollars subsidizing animal agriculture. According to WSPA\, “Canada’s hog production sector would not even be viable were it not for multi-million dollar taxpayer-funded subsidies.” We should all be concerned about this\, and here’s why: \n~ Environment ~\nThere is no industry in the world responsible for more environmental devastation than the global animal by-product industry. According to scientists at the World Bank\, animal agriculture is responsible for 51 percent of man-made greenhouse gases\, which is more than all forms of transportation combined and tripled! It is also the world’s leading cause of deforestation\, species extinction\, and water pollution\, and uses one third of all the world’s fossil fuels\, one half of all fresh water on the planet\, and 70 percent of all agricultural land. \nBut the government continues to subsidize this industry\, and environmental organizations refuse to address it. \n~ Health ~\nAt the same time\, studies show that the consumption of animal products is directly linked to cancer and heart disease – the leading causes of death in Canada. It has gotten so bad\, that now 1 in 3 people in Canada will get Cancer in their lifetime. \nBut the government refuses to look at the research\, and keeps pouring billions of taxpayer dollars into animal agriculture\, despite the fact that it’s making us sick. When a cheeseburger at McDonald’s costs a fifth the price of a salad\, we have a problem! This is the result of government subsidies. \n~ Animal Suffering ~\nAt the same time\, undercover investigations from Mercy for Animals Canada\, and documentaries like Earthlings\, and Meet your Meat are making it harder and harder to deny the fact that the way animals are treated on factory farms is inherently cruel. \nThe vast majority of the population does not want animals to suffer\, but the government refuses to update barbaric laws that see mother pigs kept in gestation crates so small they cannot turn around for 3 years\, and babies mutilated with no anesthetic. \nRecently\, Mercy for Animal conducted an investigation that revealed pigs being severely abused in front of government inspectors. Coverage of the investigation on several news stations was successful at getting support from more than 80\,000 Canadians\, who signed a petition asking that Canada’s transportation regulations be updated to prevent egregious animal suffering\, but when Mercy for Animals brought this petition to the Minister of Agriculture\, it was completely ignored. \nMercy for animals has conducted dozens of investigations\, all which reveal horrific abuse\, and all of which have been ignored by the government. \nWHY A RALLY?\nThere comes a time when things have gotten so bad\, so out of control; when our government has stopped looking out for what’s best for the people\, and we need drastic change to fix things – a revolution\, or complete circle. The time is now\, and here’s why: \n~ We Have People Power ~\nBecause we are attacking this issue from three fronts: the environment\, health\, and animals welfare\, we will have almost every single Canadian behind us. Ask your friends around you if they are worried about global warming\, animal cruelty\, or cancer. Everyone is concerned about at least one of them\, but nobody knows what to do about it. \n~ Research & Documentaries Backing Us ~\nAn ever-growing list of research\, undercover investigations\, and documentaries are surfacing that connect factory farming with environmental devastation\, health problems\, and animal cruelty. As a result\, awareness and concern about the issue has never been stronger; it has become impossible to ignore. \n~ The Government Won’t Act ~\nEven if our government wanted to change\, they can’t. They are so invested in animal agriculture\, that it is unreasonable to expect a change without something drastic taking place. \n~ Nonprofits Cannot Do It ~\nWhile there are nonprofits concerned about the environment\, health\, and animals\, it is unlikely that any one of them will achieve the kind of change we need on their own. They need a single entity to bring them together; That’s what Nation Rising is. \n~ Not Acting Is Not An Option ~\nThe consequences of doing nothing are devastating: Cancer\, heart disease\, global warming\, species extinction\, water pollution\, rampant animal abuse. Everything is linked to one culprit: animal agriculture and it’s time we said ENOUGH! \nOUR DEMANDS\n1. Stop Subsidies to Animal Agriculture\nStop the multi-billion dollar subsidies of animal agriculture. It is wrong that our tax dollars are used to fund food that makes us sick\, destroys our environment\, and support animals abuse we do not agree. \n2. Make Healthy Food Affordable\nCreate new subsidies to ensure healthy\, organic\, plant-based food is made available and affordable to everyone\, in particular to Indigenous and low-income communities. \n3. Help Farmers Transition to Plant-based Farming\nProvide financial assistance to farmers wishing to make the transition to plant-based farming. Also setup the necessary committees to provide guidance and assistance to farmers. \nNote: Please check Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:1st Annual Commercial Seal Hunt Protest
DESCRIPTION:(Picture above: Ragged Jacket harp seal pup. Copyright HSUS.) \nAs seal hunters and fishermen call on our government for a seal cull\, it is urgent we stand up and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! IT’S TIME TO END THE CANADIAN COMMERCIAL SEAL HUNT! \nOf the 78\,000 harp seals killed in 2017\, it is estimated over 90% of these are juveniles between 3 weeks and 3 months old. Only 20% to 25% of carcasses or flippers are brought back to land for food. A mind blowing 75 to 80% are killed for their fur only\, corpse dumped at sea. \nThe ragged jackets\, baby seals about 12 days old\, are prized kills. Why? This is when the baby harp starts to molt its white coat. As soon as a patch of white fur has shed that baby seal is done for. \nThese ragged jackets earn top dollar for the sealers and that is because the grey fur underneath is silky soft and has not spotted black yet. \nSealers prefer to hunt grey seals for food. They are bigger and apparently taste better than the harp seals\, who are much smaller. \nOver the years\, various studies have been conducted to assess the level of animal suffering in Canada’s seal ‘hunt’. An analysis by a panel of veterinarians funded by IFAW in 2001 showed that about 40% of the seals were skinned while alive and conscious.\nhttp://www.harpseals.org/about_the_hunt/index.php \nWe\, as taxpayers\, are paying for the hunt approximately $2.5 million per year minimum; with the export value of the seal hunt making barely $500\,000. In fact\, the seal hunt has run a 2 million deficit and the Government blames it on “Gullible Public” according to draft minutes of a censored Intradepartmental Discussion on Seals. The Department of Fisheries has concealed data on the Atlantic hunt since 2014\, when figures confirmed its value declined significantly.\nhttps://www.blacklocks.ca/seal-hunt-runs-2m-deficit-blamed-on-stupid-public/ \nThe hunt is so violent and inhumane. The Canadian Government realized that as well\, and set up a law that no one is allowed within one nautical mile of the hunt without a license to kill or an observers permit. Animal welfare organizations or anyone who is concerned for the seals well-being are not granted observers permit.\nhttp://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/seal-phoque/management-gestion-eng.htm#obsv \nHumane Society International states “The commercial sealing industry has been a taxpayer funded make-work project for decades. Canada’s top seal processor is warehousing a stockpile of baby seal skins no one wants\, and the sole processor buying seal products is only able to do so with Government financing. Instead of propping up this dead industry with scarce tax dollars\, our Government should invest in a buyout of the commercial sealing industry. This plan would involve ending the commercial seal hunt\, compensating sealers and investing in viable economic alternatives. Economists tell us a sealing industry buyout would cost Canadians less than the vast subsidies required to continue this brutal slaughter. It would certainly offer more hope for coastal communities than empty promises of future markets for the skins of clubbed and shot baby seals.”\nhttp://www.hsi.org/world/canada/news/releases/2015/04/federal-budget-commercial-seal-hunt-waste-042215.html?referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.ca%2F \nThe seals seem to be the Governments scapegoat for everything and the Commercial Seal Hunt is always the ‘remedy.’ From apparent population control to the cod decline – Cod is 1% of a seals diet. We will have FISHLESS oceans by 2050 because of HUMAN over fishing – but you want to blame the seals? Really?? \nPlease come and take a stand with us on March 26\, 2018 at the Ontario Legislative Building. The Government of Canada has to abolish the cruel\, inhumane and unnecessary Canadian Commercial Seal Hunt! We will not stand for the barbaric slaughter of seals and let’s put our tax dollars to good use and instead of death and cruelty\, let’s put it towards eco-tourism. \n(This protest is against the Canadian Commercial Seal Hunt and has nothing to do with the Indigenous Hunt.) \nAbout The Hosts:\nJennifer: I am of Newfoundland decent and actually lived there in a small town for a few years. It was during this time I witnessed a group of seals being slaughtered by Newfoundland sealers with a baseball bat. To say it was horrific is an understatement. I will never forget the sound of their cries\, and how many times those men had to hit each seal before the seal actually stopped looking up. I will never stop defending the seals because of that day. Seals have a natural curiosity and innocence about them. Seals are also very intelligent\, self aware mammals that do not want to die. No one deserves that type of inherently cruel torture. \nBrigitte: I grew up in a small coastal community called Shediac\, located in south eastern New Brunswick. As 13th generation born in Canada and Maritimer\, seal meat has never been part of my Canadian culture or diet. \nOne year ago almost to the day\, I had the privilege of leading Sea Shepherd campaign Operation Ice Watch. Op Ice Watch raised global awareness of the impact climate change on the seal population. The ice in the Gulf of St Lawrence is melting\, thinning and breaking\, drowning newborn seals. Each new generation of seals who survive the elements also have to survive the riffles and hakapiks of seal “harvesters”. \nBaby white coat harp seals are angelic. I have looked into those big beautiful black eyes. There is an innocence and vulnerability that is undeniable. \nOur purpose is to empower each of us who want to end the hunt with facts\, not propaganda. Society has become confused and complacent with misinformation and lack of information available about the commercial hunt. Questions and discussions are welcome! \nPLEASE NOTE: This event is family friendly and all ages are welcome. We realize the commercial seal hunt is a controversial issue and tempers can flare. Differences of opinions will be discussed in a respectful manner. We reserve the right to delete comments that are hateful\, racist\, vulgar and inaccurate in nature. We will block offenders. \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

DESCRIPTION:The Animal Hope & Wellness Foundation (AHWF) and Toronto Pig Save are joining forces and putting on a large-scale demonstration to speak out against China’s Dog Meat Trade and the annual Yulin Dog Meat Festival – a 10 day torture fest beginning on June 21st. \nThere has been NO confirmation from government officials in Yulin about a dog meat ban at this year’s festival; it is expected to go on as it has the last 8 years. \nPlease join us June 9\, 2017 from 11am to 1pm eastern to speak out on behalf of the dogs and cats of China! You are needed – we will give a strong and impactful message to the Chinese Government in Toronto. \nChina’s dog and cat meat trade is a horrific and unregulated commercial industry that brutally tortures animals for profit. An estimated 10 million dogs and 4 million cats are slaughtered in China each year for meat. The gruesome dog meat festival slaughter will be happening at a rapid rate starting soon! \nThis is a peaceful but powerful demonstration! Come prepared to use your voice in uniform with the group; throwing water on cars\, profanity or any unruly behavior will not be allowed. We will be adhering to city ordinances and not blocking sidewalks\, etc. \nNot in Toronto? We encourage you to join or organize a demonstration at your state capital. Please contact Animal Hope and Wellness at June9demo@gmail.com It is important to get H.Res 30 to the House floor to be voted on – this will be the first time the U.S. has condemned the China dog meat trade. \nWHEN POSTING PHOTOS TO SOCIAL MEDIA FROM THE PROTEST\, PLEASE USE THE HASHTAGS:\n#stopdogmeat\n#enddogmeat \nShare. This is the last stand before Yulin. Trucks are already underway\, and the largest shipments leave their areas on the 14th. \nMake a stand. Get your local rescue groups involved. Be the voice for the dying.

SUMMARY:Mass Seal Hunt Protest - Ottawa
DESCRIPTION:The Ottawa Animal Defense League\, Save Our Seals Organizations and PETA \, are joining together to Protest and make a major stance against the seal slaughter\, also known as Canada’s Shame. We are calling on all Animal Rights family members\, to join in a collective effort to put an end to the seal slaughter once and for all. Making a large Visual Appeal on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. \nIf you are not from the are and plan on driving up with a car pool of people. The Ottawa Animal Defense League will be planning another event on the Sunday so that we can use the numbers effectively (if people are interested in staying for a fur protest that is an option). \nCanada’s annual commercial seal hunt is the largest slaughter of marine mammals on the planet. Facing harsh criticism over the world over because of the hunt’s cruelty and unsustainability\, the Canadian government and fishing industry have spread much misinformation but the facts of the cruelty inflicted are real. \nIn Canada\, newborn ―whitecoat harp seals are protected from hunting. But as soon as they begin to shed their white coats – as young as 12 days of age – these baby seals can be legally hunted by sealers. In fact\, fully 97 percent of the seals killed in the commercial seal hunt over the past five years have been less than 3 months of age—and most were one month old or less. At the time of slaughter\, many of the pups had not yet eaten their first solid meal or taken their first swim. Sealers target the baby seals because their skins are in ―prime‖ condition and fetch the highest prices. \nScientists say today’s seal kill levels are not sustainable. A recent study by Professor Stephen Harris from Bristol University asserts that the Canadian management regime for harp seals does not apply a precautionary principle and threatens the survival of seal populations. Because seals only reach breeding age at six years of age\, the impacts of these high hunting levels are only starting to be felt. Under its current management plan\, by the time the Canadian government decides to take action to save the population\, it may well be too late to intervene. Notably\, today‘s kill levels meet and even exceed those of the 1950s and 60s\, when over-hunting quickly reduced the harp seal population by nearly two thirds. \nThe seal hunt is an economically marginal activity and could easily be phased out. The Canadian government estimates between 5000 and 6000 Canadians derive some income from sealing. Notably\, sealers are commercial fishermen who earn\, on average\, less than 5 percent of their annual incomes from killing seals—the remainder comes from fisheries. Even in Newfoundland\, where most sealers live\, income from the seal hunt accounts for less than one percent of the province‘s economy.\nThe government does provide bailout loans to the industry meaning our tax payer dollars are still used to fund this cruel slaughter. \nNearly 70 percent of Canadians holding an opinion are opposed to the commercial seal hunt\, and even higher numbers oppose specific aspects of it\, such as killing seal pups (Environics Research\, 2005). 66 percent of Canadians holding an opinion support foreign nations banning seal product trade\, and 67 percent oppose their government spending public money to lobby foreign governments on behalf of the sealing industry (Pollara 2007). \nhttp://www.humanesociety.org/issues/seal_hunt/facts/about_seal_hunt.html \nIf you arrive Friday night\, Ottawa has some great vegan places to eat. (note most of these places do carry a few dairy options unfortunately but mainly all vegan) \nCafe my house- Fully vegan\nLa Belle Verte- in Gatineau (right across the bridge)\nPure Kitchen\nThe Green Door (by weight)\nThe Table\nBlossom Cafe\nPerfection Satisfaction Promise \nPlaces with vegan options (but serve meat)\nAsian Stars\nHareg (amazing Etheopian)\nKhao Thai\nSushi Village \nIf other cities are interested in doing a protest on the same day or around the same time that is more then okay and please feel free to do so. All you will need is activists\, some posters and a good location in your city. Create an event\, promote it and lets Unite to end this awful hunt! \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Vegan AR Activists for International Women's Day!
DESCRIPTION:March 11th is International Women’s Day and Toronto indeed has a march planned which is great! The vegan AR contingent was certainly missing from the Women’s March earlier this month so this is a great opportunity to stand in solidarity with women everywhere as well as send out our message of love and compassion and respect towards non-human animals as well\, especially those mothers who have their babies torn from them and who are abused in such horrible ways. Let’s give them a big voice on this day! Please join us! \nBelow is the link to the main March page for more details about the event: \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/727733757401287/

SUMMARY:Kathleen Wynne - Include Kiska in the Orca Ban
DESCRIPTION:The Government of Ontario\, under the leadership of Premier Kathleen Wynne recently prohibited the breeding and acquisition of orcas (killer whales) in the province. \nOrcas are long-lived\, wide ranging\, deep diving\, highly social\, exceptionally intelligent marine mammals. They rank\, along with elephants\, great apes and humans\, as one of the world’s most social creatures. \nWhile the Ontario government’s ban on orcas was welcome\, it grandfathered Kiska\, Canada’s last surviving captive orca\, which means she may spend the rest of her life alone at Marineland in Niagara Falls. \nDespite being in captivity for the bulk of her life\, Kiska still shares most\, if not all\, of the same biological\, behavioural and social needs as her wild counterparts. The government acknowledged that orcas no longer have a place in captivity in Ontario\, but they chose to leave Kiska with few prospects of a different\, possibly better\, life. That doesn’t make a lot of sense. \nKiska gave birth to 5 calves during her long captivity and none survived longer than 6 years. Her various tank-mates over the years have either been moved or died. Kiska faces spending the remainder of her life without the company of other orcas. Kiska deserves better. \nJoin us for a peaceful demonstration to urge Kathleen Wynne to revisit the marine mammal captivity issue by doing whatever is necessary to include Kiska in the orca ban.
