SUMMARY:Imagine the Ocean Without: Saving The Baby Harp Seals
DESCRIPTION:JOIN SEA SHEPHERD’S FIGHT TO SAVE THE OCEANS – DOING WHAT OTHERS CAN’T OR WON’T. \nEnjoy an afternoon in honour of the “whitecoat” baby harp seals. Ticket includes a delicious vegan banquet\, free wine & beer\, silent auction featuring unique\, one-of-a-kind items\, and much more! \n– Captain Paul Watson will be making an exclusive live appearance via Skype! \nCaptain Watson’s passion to save the seals began at the age of nine when he first saw the evidence of the seal hunt – witnessing vivid\, scarlet-on-white images. Watson’s book “SEAL WARS: Twenty-Five Years on the Front Lines with the Harp Seals” chronicles a history of the seal hunt and recounts the numerous campaigns he has led. Spending time in prison\, debating politicians\, and putting his life on the line. \n– Operation Ice Watch talk and Q&A with Campaign Leader Brigitte Breau and Media Videographer Marketa Schusterova: \nSea Shepherd’s Operation Ice Watch was launched in March 2017 in the Gulf of St. Lawrence\, Eastern Canada\, commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Brigitte Bardot’s visit to the ice floes in 1977\, to oppose the slaughter of baby harp seals. \nThe 2017 campaign brought actress and activist Michelle Rodriguez to the ice floes and alerted the world to some of the worst ice conditions ever seen. \nSolid ice is critical to the survival of seals\, but the ice floes are thinning\, breaking and melting – drowning newborn seals. The crew described the scene as “an ecological disaster.” \nWE CAN’T IMAGINE THE OCEAN WITHOUT BABY HARP SEALS. CAN YOU? \nOther Special Appearances By: \n– Phil Demers: Screening of “The Walrus Whisperer” \nPhil Demers is a former professional marine mammal trainer at Marineland and is best known for his unique relationship with a captive Pacific walrus named Smooshi. Their relationship garnered international attention. \nMarineland continues to pursue legal action against Demers. \n– Performance by local jazz band “Robert Lee Trio”: \nRobert Lee is a basist in Toronto\, completing his degree in jazz music at Humber College. He has had the disctinction of performing in a number of festivals\, including the Guelph Jazz Music Festival and the Toronto Undergraduate Jazz Festival and many other local venues. He is joined by vocalist Mingjia Chen and guitarist Aiden Funston. \n– Leslie Phelan\, Author \nLeslie Phelan is a Toronto-based artist and writer\, best known for her debut novel Lovesick Little\, a modern retrofitting of Hans Christian Andersen’s famous 1837 fairy tale\, The Little Mermaid. A passionate Earth and ocean lover\, Leslie has created her book as an offering to all those enchanted by a good siren story\, and also as a vehicle to help spread awareness of some of the devastation being inflicted upon the ocean world today\, that the men and women of conservation societies like Sea Shepherd work tirelessly to halt and reverse. In honour of their brave and crucial efforts\, 100% of the proceeds raised this evening from sales of Lovesick Little will go towards supporting Operation Ice Watch\, a campaign at the front lines of saving the baby harp seal. \nhttp://lesliephelan.com/ \n– Tickets are $50 in advance / $60 at the door. \n– For cash purchases\, email Brigitte at brigittebreau@hotmail.com. \n– Event hosted by Brigitte Breau and Marketa Schusterova of Operation Ice Watch \nNote: This is a 19+ event

SUMMARY:A Plastic Ocean Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (Toronto Chapter) for the Toronto Premiere of ‘A Plastic Ocean’ on World Oceans Day. \nThis high-end documentary feature film was made by the Plastic Oceans Foundation\, a global network of independent not-for-profit and charitable organisations united in their aims to change the way we deal with plastic waste by challenging society’s perception that this indestructible substance can be treated as ‘disposable’. They seek to change the world’s attitude to plastic within one generation. \nFilmed in 20 locations around the world\, “A Plastic Ocean” provides a global perspective on the issue of plastic waste in our oceans and examines the extent of the problem. Most importantly\, the documentary shows us the ways that we can turn it around not just through knowledge and behavioural changes but with amazing new technology. It has the potential to benefit our health and that of our children\, our environment and our seas. \nSea Shepherd merchandise will be available for purchase throughout the evening. \nPurchase your tickets today! \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/a-plastic-ocean-on-world-oceans-day-tickets-33791416035 \n6:00: Doors open\n6:45 – 8:30: “A Plastic Ocean” Screening (104 mins)\n8:30 – 9:00: Q&A with guest speaker Chelsea Rochman\, Assistant Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at University of Toronto. \nOne of Professor Rochman’s research objectives is “to determine and quantify the sources and sinks of plastic debris in freshwater and marine habitats. Current and ongoing projects include measuring the sources and sinks of microplastic into urban watersheds across North America\, examining plastic as a source of chemicals to aquatic habitats and quantifying plastic and associated chemical contaminants in wildlife (e.g.\, birds and fish)\, including fish and shellfish sold directly for human consumption.” \nFor more information on Professor Rochman’s work: \nhttps://rochmanlab.com/research/ \nNote: Please check Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:World Day for the End of Fishing
DESCRIPTION:The World Day for the End of Fishing calls for the abolition of exploitation\, fishing and farming of fishes\, crustaceans and cephalopods. Like all sentient beings\, fishes and other aquatic animals should be recognized with fundamental rights: the right to life\, freedom and physical integrity.\nConsideration for nonhuman animals is increasing\, but hardly for fish\, cephalopods and crustaceans. Yet\, they represent the majority (95-97%) of victims killed\, mainly for human consumption. 3\,000 billion aquatic animals are killed every year for their flesh\, while the gruesome aquatic animal trade is a global industry with no centralized database or governing body to enforce regulations or to track who gets bought and sold. We are witnessing an incredible massacre and massive exploitation without doing much about it. \nJoin us for a day of action at the St. Lawrence Market before we converge onto Ripley’s Aquarium to denounce the exploitation\, killing and consumption of aquatic animals and express our solidarity with them. We will be dedicating our presence at Ripley’s Aquarium to the late photographer\, filmmaker and conservationist Rob Stewart. \nYou are encouraged to get acquainted with the World Day for the End of Fishing and the campaign “Another Perspective on Fishes” at: https://www.end-of-fishing.org/en/wdef-and-campaign/ \n

We’ll start at noon from Devonshire Place\, travel east along Bloor\, down Yonge Street\, across Isabella\, south on Church Street\, then west on Gerrard\, past Ryerson University and down to Dundas Street\, then returning all the way north on Yonge Street\, west on Bloor and ending near the starting point. Folks who want to socialize afterwards can wander through Philosopher’s walk – a beautiful walkway just past the ROM. \nCommunity groups – we’ll email you an invite – or message us to request participation guidelines – all vegan friendly orgs will be welcomed! We’ve added the ‘Tickets’ link so you can pay via PayPal – or you can send us a cheque\, or even cash on the day – if you can’t afford the $25 let us know 🙂 \nEveryone! Come and watch the fun\, come and participate and support the many non-profits and community associations that’ll be taking part.

SUMMARY:World Love for Dolphins Day
DESCRIPTION:As another season of dolphin slaughter draws to a close\, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is calling on volunteers\, supporters and concerned individuals around the world to join with us and our Sea Shepherd Cove Guardians as we show our love for dolphins and call for an end to the captive dolphin trade that funds the slaughter of cetaceans in Taiji’s infamous cove. \nOn Saturday\, February 13\, Sea Shepherd will teach the world about the link between captivity and the cove and encourage local businesses to stop supporting the hunt with peaceful World Love for Dolphins Day demonstrations across North America and overseas. Sea Shepherd chapters will host demos at local businesses that profit directly from the dolphin slaughter by trading on their surviving family members and stand in solidarity with Sea Shepherd’s volunteer Cove Guardians currently on the ground in Taiji. On Valentine’s weekend\, animal lovers across the globe will show the world that there is nothing to love about captivity. \nSea Shepherd Toronto Chapter will be hosting demonstraions at TWO locations this year!! We will be in the heart of the city at Dundas Square and in Niagara Falls in front of Dr. June Mergl’s veterinary office. Dr. Mergl is the official veterinary doctor for Marineland. \nTake a selfie photo with one of our posters (coming soon) and send it to us. We will post your selfies on our social media pages to proudly display your love for dolphins! Please email photos to: worldlovefordolphins@seashepherd.org. Please send us your photos by February 14\, 2015 at midnight EST. \nIf you have any questions regarding the Toronto and Niagara Falls demonstrations\, please email the Toronto Chapter at toronto@seashepherd.org. \nFor the oceans!!\nToronto Chapter Crew
