SUMMARY:Brampton Chicken Save & Earthling Ed Special Vigil
DESCRIPTION:Brampton Chicken Save is proud to have Earthling Ed join us for an afternoon on July 11th! Earthling Ed is a world-renown animal advocate\, valiantly giving talks\, changing minds and bearing witness. As part of his Ontario tour\, he will be joining us for a special chicken vigil outside of Maple Lodge in Brampton. \n1:00 – 4:00 PM on Wednesday\, July 11th. (for updates check event page at https://www.facebook.com/events/704427189727852/?active_tab=about)\n8301 Winston Churchill Blvd.\, L6Y0A2 \nPlease join us outside Maple Lodge – the largest chicken slaughterhouse in North America. We will be bearing witness to just a few of the 500\,000+ chickens killed per day\, as well as reaching out to commuters. \nTRANSIT DIRECTIONS: Input your starting location in Triplinx to see the most efficient routes for you. You can edit the options to exclude any transit systems you’d prefer to avoid. https://www.triplinx.ca/ \nPARKING: The farmer that owns the plot of land across from the slaughterhouse has given us permission to use the strip of grass along the road. However\, as a lot of people will likely show up we do encourage you to carpool as to not use up much of the space\, and save on gas & pollution. We will play it by ear as the event goes on. Please use the comments in this event page to arrange carpooling if you’d like to. \nWHAT/WHO TO WEAR/BRING: We do have signs\, but we expect to run out. You are encouraged to get creative and bring what you make so long as it’s love-based\, thought-provoking and productive. Please bring appropriate clothing for the weather. It’s meant to be very sunny\, so consider UV protection and shade for your skin. \nChildren are very much welcome and are encouraged to show off their love for the animals to ensure that people know the future generation will carry out justice for all sentient beings. Relatives\, friends\, colleagues — anyone you’d like to bring to show why you care is welcome. Veganism is not a requirement\, it’s a goal. \nMAPLE LODGE INFORMATION: \nThis is a perfect opportunity to see expose how industrialized this cruelty is and to shine a light on the more than half a million deaths per day. \nThe bulk of these deaths are the thirty-eight-day-old babies. They are not old enough to be considered adults\, just the product of decades of selectively breeding for debilitatingly accelerated growth. Each truck carries 10\,000 of these babies and they’re brought in around the clock. \nThe rest of these deaths are former egg-laying hens. Maple Lodge is the only slaughterhouse in this area of North America allowed to kill egg-layers. Maple Lodge acquires these hens for free as they are considered a waste product by farmers and hatcheries all across Ontario\, and as far as New York\, Pennsylvannia and Ohio. \nWHY BEAR WITNESS TO CHICKENS? \nChickens are loving creatures\, with the same capacity for pain and love as the rest of the animal kingdom. There is a misconception that we aim to dissipate in that some believe chickens are incapable of emotion\, or that there is a difference between hen companions and slaughtered chicks. They’re all one in the same. The only difference being the happy ones living a cozy life in backyards or sanctuaries were given the opportunity to flourish as an individual and show off who they are. We want to make the connection for people\, and show them it is WHO they were eating\, and not WHAT is on their plate. \nWHAT IS BRAMPTON CHICKEN SAVE? \nBrampton Chicken Save is part of the worldwide network known as The Save Movement. Through purely love-based activism\, we aim to open up minds and expose the suffering of these animals whom are denied individualism in the name of tradition and maintaining the long debunked logical fallacy that animal products are a necessary and healthy part of life. \nhttps://www.bramptonchickensave.org/ \nWHAT IS THE SAVE MOVEMENT? \nThe Save Movement does not condone any harassment\, vandalism\, ill-temperedness or vitriol towards any slaughterhouse employees or law enforcement. We maintain an image of good will as to not sully the message of non-violence for the sake of personal vendettas. We ask that you curb your anger and use that effort towards telling the animals’ stories to the world to normalize living vegan and to force the connection. \nhttp://thesavemovement.org/ \nWHAT IS THE END GOAL? \nWe don’t want a more ‘humane’ slaughter to take place. We want to make animal agriculture a chapter in history books pertaining to civil rights. It will take a long time\, but with you fighting for them\, their voices are louder than ever\, and the movement is growing day by day. If your effort can translate into even one changed mind\, it’s worth it. We are the raindrops hitting the asphalt from this increasingly heavy cloud just before the torrential downpour. There’s a storm brewing\, and you’re the drop that breaks the tension and starts it.

SUMMARY:Carol Adams on “The History\, Business\, Cultural Dynamics and Gender Politics of the Ordinary Hamburger”
DESCRIPTION:Writer\, feminist\, and animal rights advocate Carol Adams will speak about her new book\, Burger. All registered attendees will receive a signed copy of the book and a seat for the talk. \nBOOK SYNOPSIS: The burger\, long the All-American meal\, is undergoing an identity crisis. From its shifting place in popular culture to the efforts\, by investors such as Bill Gates\, to seek to find the non-animal burger that can feed the world\, the burger’s identity has become as malleable as that patty of protein\, itself\, before it is thrown on a grill. Carol Adams’s Burger is a fast-paced and eclectic exploration of the history\, business\, cultural dynamics and gender politics of the ordinary hamburger. \nBIOGRAPHY: Carol J. Adams is the author of numerous books\, including The Sexual Politics of Meat\, Neither Man nor Beast: Feminism and the Defense of Animals and The Pornography of Meat. She is the co-editor of several path-breaking anthologies\, including most recently Ecofeminism: Feminist Intersections with Other Animals and the Earth (with Lori Gruen). Her work is the subject of two recent anthologies\, Defiant Daughters: 21 Women of Art\, Activism\, Animals\, and The Sexual Politics of Meat and The Art of the Animal: 14 Women Artists Explore The Sexual Politics of Meat\, in which a new generation of feminists\, artists\, and activists respond to Adams’ groundbreaking work.

SUMMARY:Clean Meat: Paul Shapiro Speaking Event
DESCRIPTION:Paul Shapiro gives you a front-row seat for the wild story of the race to create and commercialize cleaner\, safer\, sustainable meat—real meat—without the animals. From the entrepreneurial visionaries to the scientists’ workshops to the big business board¬rooms—Shapiro details that quest for clean meat and other animal products and examines the debate raging around it. Since the dawn of Homo sapiens some quarter million years ago\, animals have satiated our species’ desire for meat. But with a growing global popula¬tion and demand for meat\, eggs\, dairy\, leather\, and more\, raising such massive numbers of farm animals is woefully inefficient and takes an enormous toll on the planet\, public health\, and certainly the animals themselves. But what if we could have our meat and eat it\, too? The next great scientific revolution is underway—discovering new ways to create enough food for the world’s ever-growing\, ever-hungry population. Enter clean meat—real\, actual meat grown (or brewed!) from animal cells—as well as other clean foods that ditch animal cells altogether and are simply built from the molecule up. Whereas our ancestors domesticated wild animals into livestock\, today we’re beginning to domesticate their cells\, leaving the animals out of the equation. From one single cell of a cow\, you could feed an entire village. And the story of this coming “second domestication” is anything but tame. \nLocation: Fleck Atrium (Ground floor\, North Building)\, Rotman School of Management\, U of Toronto\, 105 St George Street\, Toronto\, ON \nTickets: http://www.rotman.utoronto.ca/ProfessionalDevelopment/Events/UpcomingEvents/20180105PaulShapiro \nNote: Please check the event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Toronto Fundraising Event for Sudfeh – Palestine’s First Vegan Cafeteria
DESCRIPTION:On September 13 we will be holding a fundraising event for the Sudfeh cafeteria at D-Beatstro vegan cafe featuring guest speakers and live music. \nNot only will Sudfeh be the first vegan cafeteria in Palestine\, it will also be the first vegan cafeteria in any Arabic university in the world! Even better\, Sudfeh will be a completely not-for-profit initiative\, with all proceeds being split equally between support for animal protection projects and providing scholarships for struggling students. \n“Sudfeh” means “Serendipity” in Arabic. The name represents\, luck\, hope and being in the right place at the right time. And\, as luck would have it\, you are in the right place right now to make Sudfeh happen – will you support us in getting this ground-breaking project off the ground? \nPlease come out and show your solidarity with the Palestinian Animal League´s efforts. If animal liberation is ever to be become a reality it is imperative that grassroots groups like PAL receive international support. \n“PAL is the only locally-run animal protection charity in Palestine\, where life for both animals and people is extremely challenging. The PAL team have worked to develop a number of far-reaching projects; such as spay and neuter schemes for street dogs\, programmes to improve life for working horses and donkeys and effective humane educational projects with young people.” \n“By encouraging kindness and compassion towards people and animals\, PAL’s work is focused upon supporting people\, and particularly young people\, to channel their frustrations at day-to-day life into positive action for animals. From this ethos\, the idea for Sudfeh grew as one group of 14-year-old schoolchildren taking part in PAL’s “Youth for Change” programme came up with the idea for a vegan cafeteria at the university that they aspire to attend in the coming years. The group negotiated with the University’s president to secure the promise of a space in which to establish the cafeteria\, as well as the commitment to split the income between PAL and scholarships.” \nhttps://pal.ps/english/about-us/work-in-palestine/
