SUMMARY:Nobis/Due West/Alex Furs Protest
DESCRIPTION:Launched in 2020\, Nobis is once again running damage control on its image through the #NoColdShoulder program\, donating $50 towards participating charities for every torture-enslavement-and-murder-filled jacket and overpriced beanie they sell throughout November. Reputation repair does not equal genuine corporate social responsibility and does not offset the horrors they inflict on animals. #NoColdShoulder? More like #ColdHeart. \nAfter paying a visit to Nobis\, we can drop by Due West as well as one of the city’s worst offenders…Alex Furs.

SUMMARY:FUR FREE OUTREACH POP-UP: DOLCE GABBANA
DESCRIPTION:This event is non-violent\, communication based.\n\nThis is an outreach event – we are going to:\n– Encourage passers-by to sign our petition for a chance to enter into the next giveaway\n– Stop passers-by to talk about fur\, the fur industry and joining us in the movement and ask organizations like Dolce Gabbana and Moncler to go fur furfree\n– Hand out information to the local community about fur\, and why they should all take a stance against it.\nSigns available\, or\, bring your own!\nWinter is coming – and that means we need to keep the pressure ON. We cannot give up. We cannot take a step back. We cannot stop. Until the corporations stop exploting animals for fur and any other skin for that matter.\nHope to see you there!\n\nPlease note : this is an all-inclusive event. Everyone is welcome. We do not tolerate any discrimination\, harassment\, or name-calling.

SUMMARY:Vigil for Rabbits and Chickens
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, November 5th to raise awareness to the plight of the rabbit\, chicken\, and other bird victims who are routinely abused and exploited in the animal agriculture system. \nThis slaughterhouse is located in rural Ontario and they don’t have fences. We will not be contacting them in advance to inform them of our event (which will remain on the public space of the side of the road) so they are not prepared to block our views with trailers (which they have been known to do in the past). This is why the location isn’t tagged in the event. Please refrain from tagging Abate Packers until after the event. \nThis is a peaceful demonstration\, not a disruption. We will not be stopping trucks or trespassing. If the opportunity to bear witness to the animals presents itself\, which we hope for\, we will do so peacefully. This event will take place rain or shine\, with the exception of thunderstorms. Please mark yourself “GOING” to be informed of any updates or additional information.

SUMMARY:How to Transition to a More Plant-Based Food System
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the University of Alberta’s Sustainability Awareness Week \nThere is an urgent need to transition to a more plant-based food system to reduce the environmental footprint of food production\, mitigate zoonotic infectious disease risks\, improve dietary health and reduce chronic disease\, and avoid many harms to both farmed and wild nonhuman animals. But how can we achieve such a transition in the face of the economic and cultural forces that perpetuate the unsustainable status-quo of a food system that is far too reliant on animal products? \nIn this session our speakers will discuss with us some vitally important concrete steps that can be taken both in the setting of institutions like the University of Alberta and other public and private institutions to rapidly achieve the much needed transition to a more plant-based food system. These include working to implement the aims of: \nDefaultVeg\, which is seeking to make plant-based food the default in universities and other public and private institutions\, while giving people the choice to opt in for meals with animal products; \nThe Canadian University Campaign\, which is working to implement plant-rich catering in campus food services at universities across Canada; \nNation Rising\, which is lobbying to shift multi-billion dollar government subsidies away from animal agriculture and towards funding a just transition to a plant-based food system\, and; \nProVeg International\, which works with international decision-making bodies\, governments\, food producers\, investors\, the media\, and the general public to help the world transition to a society and economy that are less dependent on animal agriculture and more sustainable for humans\, animals\, and the planet. \nSpeakers: \nJoey Tuminello on DefaultVeg \nEleanor Carrara on the Canadian Universities Campaign \nKathleen Kevany on the Universities Campaign at Dalhousie \nDarlene Levecque on Nation Rising \nJessika Ava on ProVeg International Grants \nSimone Luhr on ProVeg International Institutional Initiatives \nSpeaker Bios: \nJoey Tuminello is an assistant professor of philosophy at McNeese State University\, and a program coordinator for the nonprofit organizations Farm Forward and Better Food Foundation\, including the DefaultVeg campaign. His research interests include the philosophies of food\, medicine\, animals\, and environment through the lenses of hermeneutics\, pragmatism\, and Jainism. At McNeese\, Joey mostly teaches biomedical ethics and occasional sections of ethical theory and existentialism. \nEleanor Carrara (B.Sc. McGill\, MBA Concordia)\, is Executive Director of the Organizing Committee for the Plant-Based Transition Coalition. Eleanor started the Canadian university campaign in the fall of 2020 working with the senior leadership\, dining & sustainability teams\, ambassadors\, and organizations such as DefaultVeg to promote the plant-based transition. Eleanor has been a committed life-long animal rights activist and environmentalist. Her professional career as Vice President of Sales Operations at one of the largest global digital infrastructure companies had occupied most of her time over the last couple of decades. She now dedicates herself full time to combatting animal agriculture and promoting plant-based diets. \nKathleen Kevany is an Associate Professor and Director of Rural Research Collaborative with Dalhousie University\, Faculty of Agriculture\, where she specializes in sustainable diets\, well-being\, and systems analysis. She is on advisory boards for Canadian Food Studies\, and Journal of Agriculture\, Food Systems\, and Community Development\, as well as the President of the Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation. Kathleen is a certified counsellor\, psychotherapist and soon to complete certification in Plant-based Nutrition with Cornell University. She has thirty years experience working within business\, government\, and community development and was the Chief Energy Orchestrator (CEO) of The Decentralized Intelligence Agency. Kathleen delights in building relationships based on curiosity\, openness\, compassion\, and playfulness. She also relishes making delectable dishes that nourish people and are friendly to the planet. \nDarlene Levecque is co-founder and executive director of Nation Rising\, a non-partisan political advocacy group lobbying the federal government to shift subsidies from animal agriculture and towards a plant-based food system for the benefit of the people\, the planet\, and animals. Darlene holds a honours bachelor of science in languages from Laurentian University\, and a deep expertise in human resources and project management acquired during her tenure of over 30 years at a prominent Canadian telecommunications company. Darlene’s passion for animals has translated into volunteering her time for more than 15 years with several Canadian dog-rescue organizations\, devoting her time to fundraising and fostering special-needs dogs. \nJessika Ava directs the ProVeg Grants Program\, where she works to expand vegan advocacy efforts worldwide through strategic capacity-building efforts. Jessika’s niche lies in coordinating global projects\, quantitative program evaluations\, and guiding philanthropic and grantmaking support. Her notable experience includes NGO management\, international grantmaking\, biostatistics\, and Asian street animal welfare. She sits on the Board of Directors of Umano\, A Just World\, and Out to Pasture Animal Sanctuary\, and is a member of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations and multiple advisory boards. She holds an MS in Biostatistics\, an MPA in Nonprofit Management and Program Evaluation\, and a BS in Biology. \nSimone Lühr works at ProVeg Germany in both the research team and the food services team. Since 2017\, she has been a project manager responsible for organizing cooking training courses for chefs\, especially for university canteens. In these\, she educates chefs on the “why” and “how” of plant-based nutrition and cooking. She helps to increase the availability and quality of vegan food in community catering. She also works as a research associate on solutions for sustainable animal-free agriculture. She holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Biology with a focus on biodiversity and ecology. \nSDG Connection: # 2\, 3\, 6\, 12\, 13\, 14\, 15 \nJoin us on Facebook Live or via Zoom:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/82596359251 \n3PM PDT\n4PM MDT\n5PM CDT\n6PM EDT

SUMMARY:Toronto Pig Save Wednesday Vigil for the Pigs
DESCRIPTION:Don’t turn away. Please join us to bear witness to\, and to speak up for\, the thousands of baby pigs whose lives are needlessly and violently stolen from them daily at Fearman’s slaughterhouses. \nPlacards\, leaflets\, support are provided.\n——————————- \nPlease read these vigil and safety notes prior to attending. \n☮️ Keeping Save Movement vigils peaceful. \n1) The purpose of Save Movement vigils is to bear witness\, to see the reality\, to connect\, to document\, then to share with others. To bring peace to a violent space. Disruptions can take place at a different time. \n2) Truck Drivers:\nThough we don’t respect what they are doing for a living\, let’s respect the drivers for giving us this time to show the world the plight of farmed animals. \n3) Slaughterhouse Workers:\nSome workers may try to taunt (though rarely anymore). Offer a wave or peace sign instead of a negative reaction. Break the cycle of violence. \n🙋‍ Keep Arms out of the truck: \nWe’ve experienced a few serious injuries from vigil attendees putting hands/arms into the truck. Please avoid the temptation to reach inside for the following reasons: \n1) The truck may suddenly move\, trapping/taking you with it. \n2) Pigs are extremely large and heavy beings. Though they may not intend to hurt\, a human arm may frighten them and simple movement can crush or break bones. Instead\, offer your hand just at the opening of the truck. Some pigs will choose to come to you and sniff/lick your hand. \n3) Fear. Many of these beings have not known kind human hands in the past. This may cause them stress. \n❤️🐷❤️ Thank you for your understanding and for coming to bear witness and to be their voice. Please bring a friend. They desperately need you.

SUMMARY:The Greenwashing of Animal Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the University of Alberta’s Sustainability Awareness Week. \nThere is a well established body of evidence showing that diets based heavily on animal products are not sustainable\, and that a transition to a much more plant-based food system is imperative in order to address climate change\, land and water use\, pollution\, and zoonotic infectious diseases. But the animal agriculture industry has responded by creating and funding its own research\, similar to the tobacco and oil industry. This industry-funded research has had a major impact on confusing the public about the extent to which animal agriculture poses an environmental risk that needs to be addressed by a transition to a more plant-based food system. \nIn this session our speakers will discuss with us some of the ways in which the animal agriculture industry has been disseminating misleading research and how this research has misled the public about the needed policy responses to our unsustainable animal-based food system. \nSpeakers will speak for the first hour followed by interactive discussion. \nSpeakers: \nVasile Stanescu on “‘Urgent Action Is Required’: Animal Agriculture\, Greenwashing\, and Climate Change\,” and \nTushar Mehta on “The Myth of Regenerative Grazing” \nSpeaker Bios: \nDr. Vasile Stanescu is associate professor of Communication Studies at Mercer University. Stanescu is co-editor of the Critical Animal Studies book series published by Rodopi/Brill\, the co-founder of the North American Association for Critical Animal Studies (NAACAS)\, the former co-editor of the Journal for Critical Animal Studies\, and former co-organizer of the Stanford Environmental Humanities Project. Dr. Stanescu is the author of over 20 peer-reviewed publications on the critical study of animals and the environment. Dr. Stanescu’s research has been recognized by The Woods Institute for the Environment\, Minding Animals International\, The Andrew Mellon Foundation\, the Culture and Animals Foundation\, the Institute for Critical Animal Studies\, and the Institutul Cultural Român (Institute for Romanian Culture)\, among others. \nDr. Tushar Mehta studied at McMaster University and then completed medical school and residency at the University of Toronto. Currently\, he practices Emergency Medicine and has also spent many years practicing Family Medicine and Addictions Medicine. Dr. Mehta also participates in international health projects\, having volunteered on a yearly basis in rural India\, and is now doing work in Haiti (hephaiti.com). Over the past five years\, Dr. Mehta has taken a strong interest in the medical evidence regarding plant-based diet and health\, as well as the comparative impact of plant versus animal based agriculture on environment and food security. He studies the academic literature regarding these subjects in order to develop a comprehensive understanding\, and works to educate others on these important topics. Along with a small team\, Dr. Mehta founded Plant Based Data (plantbaseddata.org)\, an online database which collects and organizes the most important academic and institutional literature regarding the impact plant diet has on health\, environment and food security\, including the role of animal agriculture in creating pandemics. This includes a section on economics and policy. The resource is free to access\, and meant to assist others in their education\, writing\, advocacy and policy work. \nSDG Connection: # 2\, 3\, 6\, 12\, 13\, 14\, 15 \nJoin us on Facebook Live or via Zoom:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/85457131016 \n5PM PDT\n6PM MDT\n7PM CDT\n8PM EDT
